Museo Naval de Montevideo

Naval Museum of Montevideo (Rambla Charles de Gaulle, Pocitos, Montevideo) – this museum is dedicated to the country’s navy, complete with historical cannons, along with model ships, photos and other memorabilia of this military branch’s past. A library and archives can also be found here.

The most interesting exhibit here is the account of the dramatic sinking of the German warship, the Graf Spee (off the coast of Montevideo) in 1939 (during the beginning of World War II). This occurred after conducting a campaign of terror, sinking against mostly British merchant ships. Admission: free. Hours: 8:00 am – 12 Noon and 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm (daily, except Thursdays).
